Reiki is a gentle, safe, and simple healing tool. This heart centered, hands-on energetic healing modality facilitates healing, harmony, and balance of the body, mind, and spirit.
It was "rediscovered" by a Mikao Usui during a 21 fast and meditation on Mt. Kurama, just outside of Kyoto, Japan in 1922. While Reiki has roots in Buddhism, it is NOT a religion. However, Reiki can be combined with and support any religious or spiritual practice.
Literally translated, REI is "spirit" or "soul" and KI meaning "energy." In the West, it is generally translated "universal life force energy." You can just think of it as LOVE, God Source, Universe, Holy Spirit, or Higher Self.
Reiki can reduce stress, help the body get into the parasympathetic nervous system, and can improve heart rate variability.
Reiki can facilitate mental and emotional release, supporting the body in healing itself.
Reiki is not meant to take the place of treatments by a recipient's medical professionals. It is intended to complement appropriate allopathic care. Reiki practitioners do not diagnose, prescribe, or treat for any condition. Recipient accepts responsibility for his/her own health care and maintenance.
Before a session, it is helpful for the recipient to set an intention. Ask, “What would I like to feel, heal, release, or balance?” During a session, the recipient is invited to relax and focus on that intention while focusing on their breath, noticing what is being felt in the body.
During a session, which generally lasts 45-60 minutes, a recipient will either lay down (usually on a massage table) or sit in a chair, if preferred. The recipient is fully clothed, except for shoes. The Reiki practitioner gently places hands on the body head to toe, front and back (avoiding private and sensitive areas) while offering Reiki energy.
While physical touch can be immensely healing and comforting, Reiki can be done hands-off if the recipient prefers. Reiki can also be done long-distance, meaning the practitioner and recipient can be in different locations.
Reiki works on an energetic entrainment principal, much like a tuning fork. The practitioner channels in and offers a high frequency of universal life force energy (which you can call Source, God, Holy Spirit, Universe, or just simply LOVE).
The practitioner offers this frequency as a gift to the recipient. The recipient’s body, mind and spirit are entrained to this higher vibration. To the level the recipient is ready to heal, lower vibration energies (like stress, negative emotions, and physical pain) can be released, balanced and harmonized.
After a Reiki session, the energy continues to work in the physical, mental, and emotional bodies. It is recommended to take some time after the session for quiet reflection and energy integration. If possible, consider spending some time outdoors in nature - bonus if that can be barefoot on the earth.
Everyone's healing journey is unique. In general, for acute symptoms, consider a weekly session. For ongoing support, consider monthly sessions. A person can only heal to the level that they are ready to heal at any given time for their highest and best good. Healing can be a journey of spiraling back on the same things, releasing another layer each time.
It is important to note that there is an important difference between healing and a cure. We all desire the cure, a return to that state of being “before it happened” -the diagnosis, the injury, the heartbreak. However, that is not the goal of Reiki.
While Reiki can support such miracles, its goal is healing. Healing is achieving a new balance and wholeness with what exists now - a new homeostasis. This healing is often reflected in a mental or emotional release of the “stuff” someone has been holding onto, sometimes for a long time.
The result can be a sense of releasing what was and embracing peace or acceptance with what exists now. A new balance and harmony can be found within the current life experience. When this mental and emotional healing happens, "dis-ease" in the physical body can often decrease.
Reiki is not meant to interfere with or replace the support being received by a client's medical professionals, medications, treatments, or procedures.
It is intended to complement appropriate allopathic care by supporting the mental, emotional, and spiritual bodies of the recipient.
We do not diagnose, prescribe, or treat for any condition. Client accepts responsibility for his/her own health care and maintenance.
The most powerful healing can be from letting go of thoughts, beliefs, or emotions stuck in the energy bodies. These can be connected to traumas, addictions, physical possessions, an illness being experienced, and often to current or past relationships with oneself, friends, or family.
Reiki can support transmuting these thoughts, emotions, or attachments to balance in a gentle, harmonious way. This can support the body in healing itself, whether that is on a physical, mental, or emotional level.
